- History of Basketball
- Invented by Dr. James A. Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts on January 20 ,1892
- A peach basket was used as the first basket
- Nature of the Game:
- playing area is called a court.

- Time limit of game for high school is 4 eight minute quarters.
- Game is started with a jump ball in center circle.
- The object of the game is for a team to score more points than their opponents.
- Teams
- two teams play against each other in a game.
- Each team has 5 players on the court.
- Positions - 2 guards, 2 forwards and 1 center.
- Scoring
- Field Goal (basket)- a goal made from the court- 2 points
- Free Throw (foul shot)- a goal or attempt to score from the free throw line, if successful - 1 point
- A basket that is taken from behind the 3 point line equals 3 points.
Terminology
- basket - the 18 inch ring with a suspended cord net through which players attempt to throw the ball. The basket is 10 feet from the floor.
- Dribble - to move the ball by bouncing the ball on the floor
- Discontinued Dribble - dribbling, stopping, then starting to dribble again without the ball touching another player = illegal
- Double Dribble - dribbling with 2 hands at one time = illegal
- Foul - any infraction of the rules for which a penalty is one or more free throws, or an inbound of the ball.
- Free throw - the shot given to a player to attempt to score 1 point from behind the free throw line without anyone guarding them. The line is 15 feet from the surface of the backboard.
- Pass - movement of the ball caused by a player control, throwing the ball to another player.
- Rebound - usually applied when the ball bounces from the backboard or basket.
- Traveling - when a player with possession of the ball walks without dribbling, passing or shooting = illegal
- Offense - team with possession of the ball
- Defense- the team without possession of the ball
