BASKETBALL STUDY GUIDE

  1. History of Basketball
    1. Invented by Dr. James A. Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts on January 20 ,1892
    2. A peach basket was used as the first basket
  2. Nature of the Game:
    1. playing area is called a court.
    2. Time limit of game for high school is 4 eight minute quarters.
    3. Game is started with a jump ball in center circle.
    4. The object of the game is for a team to score more points than their opponents.
  3. Teams
    1. two teams play against each other in a game.
    2. Each team has 5 players on the court.
    3. Positions - 2 guards, 2 forwards and 1 center.
  4. Scoring
    1. Field Goal (basket)- a goal made from the court- 2 points
    2. Free Throw (foul shot)- a goal or attempt to score from the free throw line, if successful - 1 point
    3. A basket that is taken from behind the 3 point line equals 3 points.
  5. Terminology
    1. basket - the 18 inch ring with a suspended cord net through which players attempt to throw the ball. The basket is 10 feet from the floor.
    2. Dribble - to move the ball by bouncing the ball on the floor
    3. Discontinued Dribble - dribbling, stopping, then starting to dribble again without the ball touching another player = illegal
    4. Double Dribble - dribbling with 2 hands at one time = illegal
    5. Foul - any infraction of the rules for which a penalty is one or more free throws, or an inbound of the ball.
    6. Free throw - the shot given to a player to attempt to score 1 point from behind the free throw line without anyone guarding them. The line is 15 feet from the surface of the backboard.
    7. Pass - movement of the ball caused by a player control, throwing the ball to another player.
    8. Rebound - usually applied when the ball bounces from the backboard or basket.
    9. Traveling - when a player with possession of the ball walks without dribbling, passing or shooting = illegal
    10. Offense - team with possession of the ball
    11. Defense- the team without possession of the ball
