Back to Basics Tips for Health and Wellness:

It is important to discuss a few tips for keeping our immune systems in tip top shape. Although many of these tips may seem “old school” there is no better line of defense for preventing illness and disease. Keeping these tips in mind this season and all year will keep us healthier… and maybe even happier!

  • SLEEP: Don’t underestimate the benefits of adequate sleep. When you are sleeping, your body is able to heal and build its defenses. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders states that sleep is necessary for our nervous systems to work properly. Growth hormone and many of the body’s cells also increase production and reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep. Since proteins are the building blocks needed for cell growth and for repair, deep sleep may truly be “beauty sleep”. Adequate sleep may also help people maintain optimal emotional and social functioning while they are awake.
  • So… adequate sleep helps your immune system, your emotional state and your physical appearance.
  • NUTRITION: Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, proteins, and healthy fats. Decrease the amount of processed foods and sugary treats filled with empty calories. If you live an active lifestyle, such as playing sports, it is essential that you give your body enough calories to meet its demands for optimal performance and health.
  • HYDRATE: Drink water! Enough said.
  • HAND WASHING is the best line of defense to prevent infecting yourself and those around you. It is not available, use the hand sanitizer supplied in various areas of the school, or bring your own and leave it in your lunch box.
  • COVER YOUR MOUTH: If you have to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or use the upper portion of your sleeve, not your hands. Put the used tissue in the waste basket.
  • STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK: If you do develop symptoms, such as fever, body aches, sore throat, headache, or cough, please stay home until you are fever free for 24 hours without Advil or Tylenol. If you are vomiting… PLEASE STAY HOME!
  • Parents: Please notify attendance by calling 908-709-6284 by 9:00 a.m. if your child will be absent. Please include the child’s name, grade, and the reason for absence. Or, email warren.jill@cranfordschools.org or ducusin@cranfordschools.org
